Horace Silver, an American jazz pianist and composer, was born on September 2nd, 1928. He was known for his funky sound and melodic improvisations, and was one of the first composers in the hard-bop genre. Silver is credited with introducing the term 'funk' into musical terminology with his 1952 piece 'Funky Hotel'. His music was influenced by various genres including soul, Latin American and African music.
